There will be no sleeping in tomorrow morning for Chad and Jenny Pines.

While many midstaters might choose to stay in bed late after welcoming in the new year, the Mechanicsburg couple will celebrate 2003 with an early morning appearance as part of QVC's "New Year New You" programming.

Recognizing the tradition of making resolutions, the home shopping leader, based in West Chester and available on local Comcast cable channels, devotes Jan. 1 to health and fitness. Exercise gurus such as Richard Simmons, Billy Blanks, and Leslie Sansone have appeared in recent years.

During the 7 to 9 a.m. time slot, Chad and Jenny's Shape & Tone "Together" workout system will debut. Chad a certified fitness and nutrition consultant, and his wife, Jenny, a medical device representative and certified fitness consultant, own Pines Fitness Consulting LLC.

"I'm thrilled to be going on Jan. 1 because I believe it is the perfect time for people to put a new exercise plan in motion," Chad said. "People have three main reasons for not working out: embarrassment of going to a health club or gym, lack of time and lack or loss of motivation due to boredom. That's why we developed a system that you can do at home, that's quick- less than 30 minutes – and most importantly, that's fun."

He said the "Together" system is a result of the Pines' clients' needs as well as their own. The package, which sells for around $20, features a 25-minute, in home total body workout video that uses a technique they call "Progressive Sequencing."

This offers simple strength training exercises with minimal rest between sets to produce fat-burning aerobic benefits without a lot of pounding on the joints.

No expensive, bulky equipment is required. You can use dumbbells as weights, or if you don't have them, substitute with everyday household items such as soup cans or water jugs.

"The idea is to get up, get moving, and get your body in motion," Chad noted.

"We encourage people to work out on treadmills, bikes and cross trainers," he explained. "Those things are great aerobic exercises. But if you still have an extra layer of fat on your arms, stomach and thighs, then you have to resistance train. This is the way to replace fat with lean muscle mass."

Also included in the package is a 30-minute audiotape that is perfect for taking on vacations or business trips. In addition, there is a complete training reference guide packed with instructional photos and nutritional information.

Despite their full schedules, the Pines have standing dates with each other every Tuesday and Sunday to work out. "We call then our 'Make a Date to Get in Shape' days," Jenny said. "Chad and I have always enjoyed working out together and continue to have great success by using each other as a support system."

She's especially pleased because she actually beats Chad at one sport – "although, when we're swimming I feel him grabbing onto my foot and pulling me backwards," she said laughing.
